The FDA requires that generic drugs demonstrate bioequivalence to their brand-name counterparts. Kava, often marketed for anxiety relief, has been associated with cases of severe liver toxicity. High-dose licorice root can elevate blood pressure and cause hypokalemia. Ephedra, once widely sold as a natural weight-loss aid, was banned by the FDA in 2004 following reports of serious cardiovascular events.
Bottom line: Natural products deserve the same critical evaluation as any pharmaceutical. Disclose all supplements—herbal or otherwise—to your prescribing physician and pharmacist. Interactions can occur even when individual products appear benign.
Myth #4: If a Little Helps, More Must Be Better
The myth: Exceeding the recommended dose of a vitamin or supplement will produce stronger or faster results.
What science says: This myth reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of how the body processes nutrients and compounds. Pharmacology operates on a concept called the dose-response relationship, and for most substances, there is an optimal therapeutic window. Below it, the effect is insufficient. Vitamin D is a prime example.
