Walk down any supplement aisle—at a pharmacy, a big-box retailer, or an online storefront—and you will encounter an overwhelming wall of bold claims, scientific-sounding terminology, and brightly colored seals. Words like bioavailable, clinically studied, and proprietary blend appear on nearly every bottle. But what do these terms genuinely mean for your health? More importantly, which details actually influence what your body receives?

Whether that excess is beneficial—or simply excreted—depends on the specific nutrient and your individual health status.

One often-overlooked detail: some ingredients will list an asterisk (*) next to their %DV, indicating that no daily value has been established. This is common with herbal extracts, amino acids, and specialty compounds. The absence of a %DV does not make an ingredient unsafe, but it does mean you should research appropriate dosages independently or consult a pharmacist.

The Bioavailability Question: Form Matters More Than You Think

Bioavailability refers to the proportion of a substance that actually enters circulation and produces an active effect. This concept is where supplement science gets nuanced—and where marketing language can become genuinely misleading.

Consider magnesium. The elemental magnesium content listed on a label tells only part of the story. Magnesium oxide, one of the most common and inexpensive forms, has a bioavailability of roughly 4%. Magnesium glycinate and magnesium citrate, on the other hand, are absorbed at significantly higher rates. Two products could list identical milligram amounts while delivering vastly different physiological outcomes.

Similarly, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is generally considered more effective at raising serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels than vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Iron as ferrous bisglycinate causes less gastrointestinal distress than ferrous sulfate for many individuals. These distinctions matter, and they will only appear in the ingredient list—not in the headline claims on the front of the bottle.

What to do: Look beyond the milligrams. Search for the specific chemical form of each active ingredient and compare it against published absorption data. A pharmacist can help you navigate these distinctions quickly.

Proprietary Blends: Transparency vs. Trade Secrets

A proprietary blend is a mixture of multiple ingredients listed under a single umbrella name, with only the total combined weight disclosed rather than individual amounts. Manufacturers often justify this practice by citing competitive trade secrets.

From a consumer standpoint, proprietary blends are a significant transparency concern. If a pre-workout supplement lists a "performance matrix" containing five active compounds at a combined 1,500 mg, you have no way of knowing whether the primary active ingredient is present at a therapeutic dose or a token amount included for label appeal.

This practice is legal and widespread. The safest approach is to favor products that disclose full ingredient quantities, particularly for compounds with established effective dose ranges.

Spotting Marketing Language That Overpromises

The FDA prohibits dietary supplement companies from making explicit disease claims—a product cannot legally claim to treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition. However, manufacturers are permitted to make structure/function claims, which describe how a nutrient supports normal body function.

Country of Manufacture: While not a definitive quality indicator, products manufactured in FDA-registered facilities in the United States are subject to domestic Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations.
